Canadian General Tower, a supplier of coated fabrics and polymeric films, opened a tech center in the east China city of Changshu to upgrade product development capabilities for China.

The 20 million yuan ($2.9 million) center is on the premises of the company¡¯s plant in Changshu. With a total floor area that tops 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet), it is CGT¡¯s largest r&d center globally, the company said.

The center integrates basic theory research, early-stage trend design and development of systems for CGT¡¯s automotive interior materials. It is also serving as a training center for the company¡¯s engineers in China.

CGT started supplying automakers in China in 2006. It opened the Changshu plant in 2011, which now supplies global automakers including General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Ford Motor Co., Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, BMW AG, Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., as well as domestic Chinese carmakers such as Great Wall Motor Co. and Geely Automobile Holdings.

CGT, headquartered in Ontario, Canada, also operates factories in Canada and the United States. It has roughly 1,200 employees globally, of which 380 are in China.
