Used-vehicle sales in China jumped 22 percent year on year to nearly 2.8 million cars and light trucks in the first quarter as demand remained strong for secondhand multipurpose vehicles, crossovers and SUVs.

Deliveries of used MPVs surged 54 percent to 157,900 vehicles, while sales of crossovers and SUVs rose 44 percent to 197,300 units, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association.

Sales of second-hand sedans increased 19 percent to nearly 1.7 million vehicles.

During the period, sales of used buses rose 8.6 percent to 281,300 vehicles, while used-truck sales increased 16 percent to 248,100 vehicles.

The dealer group did not disclose sales of microvans.

Despite robust growth, used-vehicle sales in China were eclipsed by sales of new cars and trucks.

In the first quarter, sales of new vehicles -- including trucks and buses -- rose 7 percent from a year earlier to more than 7 million, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
