Mazda, Mitsubishi suffer steep sales declines

Sales in China for two small Japanese automakers, Mazda Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., tumbled sharply in May. 

Mazda deliveries slumped 29 percent year on year to 17,385. It was the brandí»s 13th straight monthly sales decline, according to numbers disclosed by Mazdaí»s China office.

Mitsubishi deliveries contracted for the second straight month, dropping 21 percent to 10,012 in May, according to its joint venture partner GAC Motor Co. 

For the first five months, Mazda sales plunged 31 percent to 86,771 while Mitsubishi deliveries fell 17 percent to 52,029. 

Mazda builds the Mazda3 Axela and Mazda6 Atenza sedans as well as the CX-4, CX-5 and CX-8 in China with local partners China FAW Group Corp. and Changan Automobile Co. 

Mitsubishi assembles the Outlander, Eclipse Cross and ASX crossovers at its joint venture with GAC.

The performances of two major Japanese automakers, Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., in China are mixed. 

In May, Honda delivered 136,486 Honda and Acura vehicles, surging 37 percent year on year. But sales of the Nissan dipped 4.8 percent to 121,895.

Through May, sales of Honda and Acura vehicles totaled 597,027, a 19 percent jump from a year earlier. Nissan brandí»s sales slid 0.4 percent to 587,197 in the period,

Another major Japanese automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., hasní»t yet revealed its May sales in China.
