Volvo sales continue to advance behind locally built XC60, S90
Automotive News China | 2019/6/7

Volvo Car Corp. continued to buck the downturn in the Chinese market, with local sales jumping 17 percent year on year to 12,425 in May.

The growth came on robust demand for the locally built XC60 crossover and S90 sedan, said the Swedish carmaker, without revealing individual product sales.

Through May, Volvo¡¯s China deliveries rose 9.5 percent from a year earlier to 54,503.

Volvo is poised to further improve sales in its largest global market, having launched another locally assembled product -- the XC40 crossover -- in late April.

The XC40, priced at 265,000 yuan ($38,400) and higher, is the fourth model Volvo produces in China, after the XC60, S90 and S60 car.

Unlike the other three models, which are built at Volvo¡¯s plants, the XC40 is built at the Luqiao factory owned by Chinese parent Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in east China¡¯s Zhejiang province.

Volvo also is set to start assembling the first two products for its Polestar electrified performance-vehicle brand in China.

The Polestar 1, a hybrid coupe, will be built at a plant jointly owned by Volvo and Geely in the southwest China city of Chengdu, with output to begin by midyear.

Production of the Polestar 2 full-electric sedan is to start in early 2020 at Geely¡¯s Luqiao plant.
