Mercedes taps Russian chief to lead China sales

Mercedes-Benz Cars has appointed Jan Madeja, head of its Russian operations, to be its sales chief in China, effective Sept. 1.

Madeja, 51, will take over as head of Beijing Mercedes-Benz Sales Service Co. -- Mercedes-Benzí»s sales company in China, from Nicholas Speeks, Mercedes parent Daimler said. 

Madeja has worked for the German luxury car brand for more than 20 years. He has been CEO of Mercedes-Benz Russia and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales in Russia since 2012. 

Before that, he was head of Mercedes-Benz in Poland. 

Speeks has been named Mercedes-Benzí»s CEO for the United States and sales chief for the North American region. 

After steadily gaining local market share in the past few years, Mercedes-Benz surpassed Audi as the largest luxury brand in China in the first four months of this year. 

In the period, Mercedes-Benz deliveries rose 2.2 percent to 232,050 while Audi sales slid 0.5 percent to 205,698.  

In 2018, Audi remained the No. 1 luxury car brand by annual sales in China.
