EV sales growth slows; plug-in hybrid deliveries pick up
Automotive News China | 2019/5/17

Full-electric vehicle sales in China rose at a slower rate in April after Beijing slashed electrified-vehicle subsidies in March. By contrast, plug-in hybrid deliveries remained robust.

Last month, EV sales rose 9.6 percent from a year earlier to roughly 71,000, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

It was the first time monthly EV sales growth dropped to below 10 percent since the Chinese government started subsidizing electrified-vehicle purchases in 2009.

In April, plug-in hybrid deliveries surged 51 percent year on year to approximately 26,000.

Through April, EV sales across China jumped 65 percent to around 278,000 while plug-in hybrid deliveries advanced 44 percent to about 82,000.

On March 26, the Chinese government cut subsidies for EVs and plug-in hybrids by more than 50 percent and barred provincial governments from subsidizing the vehicles.

While keeping subsidies for fuel cell vehicles intact, the government is set to phase out the subsidy program for EVs and plug-in hybrids by the end of 2020.
