BAIC's EU5 electric car

BAIC to supply 20,000 customized EVs for Didi fleet
Automotive News China | 2019/4/2

Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., a unit of state-owned BAIC Motor Co., plans to deliver 20,000 customized vehicles to ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing under a partnership deal the two sides struck in January.

The vehicle is BAIC¡¯s EU5 compact electric sedan. The first batch of 10,000 EU5s were delivered to Didi last month and the rest will be shipped this year, BJEV said.

The customized EU5 has a range of 416 kilometers on one charge. It has on-board payment and navigation systems to allow drivers to automatically pay vehicle parking fees and plan routes.

The electric sedan also offers in-car infotainment and wireless internet connection for ride-hailing customers. It will provide vehicle location and vehicle-theft warning services for future ride-hailing fleet operators, according to BJEV.

In January, BJEV and Didi established a joint venture in Beijing to develop telematics and a fleet management system for BAIC¡¯s EU5 to allow the EV to be incorporated into Didi¡¯s ride-hailing fleet.

BJEV is China¡¯s largest battery EV maker. It delivered 158,012 EVs in 2018, a surge of 53 percent from a year earlier.

Didi said it had registered 400,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids on its platform in China by the end of January.

In 2016, Didi acquired the Chinese business of its U.S. peer, Uber, consolidating its dominance of the domestic ride-hailing market.
