VW brand to launch 3 electric cars in mid-2019
Automotive News China | 2019/3/29

Volkswagen brand plans to kick off sales of its first three locally produced full-electric cars in China at midyear to expand its product mix of electrified vehicles.

The cars, unveiled this week in the south China port city of Zhuhai, are the battery versions of the Golf, Bora and Lavida compact sedans, Volkswagen Group said.

The electric variants of the Golf and Bora will be built at VWs joint venture with China FAW Group while the electric Lavida will be assembled at the partnership with SAIC Motor Corp.

The electric cars will have a range of 270 kilometers (168 miles) on a full charge.

VW brand will begin introducing vehicles based on its MEB electric vehicle platform in China in 2020.

After launching plug-in hybrid variants of the Variant and Passat sedans and the Tiguan crossover in 2018 in China, VW brand plans to offer plug-in hybrid versions of the Magotan sedan and the Tayron crossover over the next 12 months.

It plans to make 10 EVs and plug-in hybrids available in China and to increase output of these vehicles to 300,000 by 2020, VW said.

China is VW brands largest market. In 2018, the German marques local deliveries dipped 2.1 percent to 3.11 million.
