Didi forms self-driving vehicle subsidiary in Shanghai
Automotive News China | 2019/3/5

China¡¯s largest ride-hailing service provider Didi Chuxing incorporated a subsidiary in Shanghai to develop technologies for connected and automated vehicles.

The subsidiary, with registered capital of 10 million yuan ($1.5 million), is in Shanghai¡¯s suburban Jiading district, according to the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, a Beijing website that tracks the credit status of China businesses.

Establishing the subsidiary is the latest step Didi has taken toward developing autonomous driving technologies.

In 2017, the company opened a lab in Mountain View, Calif., to explore the application of artificial intelligence in vehicle driving.

Last year, it was approved by local regulators to test self-driving vehicles in California and the Chinese capital of Beijing.

In 2016, Didi acquired the Chinese business of its U.S. peer Uber. The deal consolidated the Chinese company¡¯s dominant position on the domestic ride-hailing market.

Didi, headquartered in Beijing, also offers ride-hailing services in select cities in Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Japan.
