Toyota: China sales growth to top 8.5% in 2018
Automotive News China | 2018/11/27

Toyota Motor Corp. predicts the company¡¯s China sales will grow by more than 8.5 percent in 2018 despite the second-half downturn in the overall market.

"Our forecast is that Toyota¡¯s China sales in 2018 will exceed the [annual] record high of 1.4 million reached in the past," Toyota's China chief, Kazuhiro Kobayashi, said at the Guangzhou auto show this month.

Kobayashi attributed Toyota¡¯s growth to new models developed on the Japanese auto giant¡¯s new global vehicle architecture, known as TNGA for short, though he didn¡¯t disclose sales of the models.

Toyota has launched sales of three TNGA-based products in China since 2017: the eighth-generation Camry sedan last year, and the C-HR subcompact crossover and Izoa sedan in June.

At the Guangzhou auto show, Toyota launched orders for its fourth TNGA-based product -- the retooled Avalon sedan, while unveiling two additional models developed on the architecture ¨C the redesigned Corolla and Levin.

In the first ten months of the year, Toyota¡¯s China deliveries jumped 13 percent, Kobayashi said at the show, without revealing details. Across the auto industry, sales of cars and light trucks have dropped 0.1 percent this year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

In 2017, Toyota delivered roughly 1.29 million vehicles in China, up 6.6 percent from 2016.
