Daimler's existing tech center in Beijing

Mercedes-Benz plans 2nd r&d center to accelerate product rollout
Automotive News China | 2018/11/16

Mercedes-Benz is planning a second r&d center in China to speed localization of new products.

The 1.1 billion yuan ($158.3 million) r&d center will be on the premises of Daimler¡¯s joint venture with BAIC Motor Corp. in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

The new r&d hub, which is set to begin operations in 2020, will support the joint venture¡¯s existing r&d center in Beijing and test new energy vehicle technology, powertrain and chassis, emissions and in-vehicle air quality, Daimler said.

Daimler¡¯s partnership with BAIC produces passenger vehicles in Beijing and vans in the east China city of Fuzhou under the Mercedes-Benz brand.

The joint venture will start producing Mercedes-Benz¡¯s EQ-series electric vehicles in Beijing in 2020.

China is Mercedes-Benz¡¯s largest single market. In the first ten months, the German luxury brand delivered 550,938 vehicles in China, an increase of 13 percent from the same period last year.
