Tesla's Shanghai factory to produce 2 models in first phase

BEIJING -- Tesla Inc.'s Shanghai factory plans to produce two models in its first phase, a Shanghai government filing showed on Wednesday.

The new factory intends to manufacture the Model 3 and Model Y, with annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles, according to a filing by the environmental assessment company conducting a feasibility study for the project.

A Tesla spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Model 3 is what Tesla bills as its affordable electric sedan. The Model Y will be a crossover based on the Model 3.

Tesla signed an agreement with the Shanghai government last week for a 9.3 million-square-foot (864,885-square-meter) site to secure its first overseas plant, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk has estimated will cost around $2 billion (13.9 billion yuan) to construct.
