Chery hires industry veteran Kevin Rice as design chief
Automotive News China | 2018/10/5

Chery Automobile Co. hired veteran vehicle designer Kevin Rice as design chief as the state-owned Chinese carmaker seeks to sell vehicles in Europe.

Rice¡¯s appointment as vice president and global car design chief became effective Monday, Oct. 1, Chery said.

Rice, 55, is a British national. He had been a freelance car designer in Japan.

He started his car design career I.DE.A Institute, the Italian design and engineering company, and later worked for European car brands including Opel, Saab, BMW and Japanese brand Mazda, according to Chery.

Chery established a design center in Frankfurt this year. It expects to launch vehicles in Europe after 2020.

Chery, headquartered in Wuhu in east China¡¯s Anhui province, is majority owned by the Wuhu city government. The company, which has suffered financial losses for years, is seeking to attract investments from the private sector in China.

In 2017, Chery¡¯s sales dropped 4.6 percent year on year to below 562,700 vehicles.

Chery also runs a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover in Changshu in east China¡¯s Jiangsu province.
