BYD lands largest overseas contract for electric sedans in Thailand
Automotive News China | 2018/8/24

BYD Co. won a contract from Thailand¡¯s Land Transport Department to supply more than 1,100 e6 electric compact sedans to the Southeast Asian country.

It is the largest order the Chinese company has secured overseas for EVs.

The first batch of 101 e6s were delivered to the Thai capital of Bangkok last week. They will be used as taxi cabs in the city.

The e6 is powered by BYD¡¯s proprietary lithium iron phosphate battery. It has a range of 400 kilometers on one charge, which takes two hours, according to BYD.

BYD started shipping EVs, including the e6s and K9 electric buses, to Thai companies in 2012.

BYD, based in the south China city of Shenzhen, is listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It is partly owned by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett and is the largest electrified vehicle maker in China.

In the first seven months of the year, the company sold 261,812 vehicles globally, including 93,677 EVs and plug-in hybrids.

BYD has delivered EVs, most of which are electric buses, to more than 50 foreign countries. It has also accelerated construction of EV assembly plants outside China.

While assembling electric buses in the United States, Scotland and Brazil, it is building electric bus plants in Hungary, France and Ecuador. It also plans to start constructing an EV factory in Morocco next year.
