Fiat Chrysler slump continues amid aging product lineup
Automotive News China | 2018/7/24

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles China sales plunged 35 percent to 11,371 in June as the automaker has slowed the introduction of new and redesigned models.

FCAs first-half China sales also fell 35 percent to 70,278, according to FCAs joint venture partner Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

GAC didnt disclose sales of individual models sold by the joint venture.

FCA posted robust growth over the past two years when it launched sales of three locally produced Jeep models -- the Cherokee, Renegade and Compass -- from 2015 to 2016.

But it took the automaker a year and half to launch sales of a fourth Jeep model, the Grand Commander, which went on sale in April.

FCA also stopped building new Fiat models in China several years ago. GAC FCA, a 50-50 partnership between GAC and FCA, now only assemble two sedans -- the Viaggio and Ottimo -- under the Fiat brand.

Analysts say FCA needs to build more new products, especially Jeep models, in China to reverse the sales slump and counter steep duties.

In retaliation for U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports designed to target China producers, the Chinese government imposed a punitive tariff of 25 percent on July 6 on light vehicles imported from the United States.
