VW brand sales slide in June as consumers await lower tariffs
Automotive News China | 2018/7/10

The Volkswagen brand abruptly lost steam in China last month with sales dipping 1.7 percent from a year earlier to 228,500, after healthy growth in the first five months.

The German brand blamed a cut in tariffs on imported vehicles for the slide in volume.

China reduced tariffs on imported vehicles to 15 percent from 25 percent, effective July 1. Some Chinese consumers postponed purchases in June because of the expected tariff cut, the VW brand said.

While VW assembles most of its car and light-truck lineup locally, the VW brand imports eight nameplates in China -- the Tiguan, Sharan, Touareg, Beetle, Variant, Golf, Multivan and Caravelle. In 2017, the VW brand sold roughly 53,000 imported vehicles in China.

In the first half of this year, the VW brandí»s China sales rose 6.3 percent year on year to 1,483,200. The brand didní»t reveal sales of imported vehicles for the period.
