VW brand May sales gain driven by compact sedans
Automotive News China | 2018/6/12

Volkswagen brand delivered 251,600 vehicles in China last month, an increase of 4.1 percent from a year earlier.

The growth was driven by demand for the Bora, Lamando and Polo compact sedans, Volkswagen Group said, without disclosing sales of individual models for VW brand.

Through May, VW brand¡¯s 2018 China sales advanced 7.9 percent year on year to 1,254,700.

VW Group is expanding production capacity as well as its VW brand product lineup to boost sales further in China, its largest market.

Last month, the German auto giant opened an assembly plant in the east China port city of Qingdao. It is also due to launch production at a fourth plant in the south China city of Foshan this month and open a factory in the north China port city of Tianjin in August.

The Qingdao and Tianjin factories will build vehicles for VW brand only, while the new plant in Foshan will produce vehicles for VW and Audi brands. The three plants can each produce up to 300,000 vehicles a year at full capacity.

In addition to Foshan, VW brand operates factories in Changchun, Chengdu, Shanghai, Nanjing, Ningbo, Urumqi and Changsha.

VW brand plans to launch at least 12 crossovers and SUVs in China by 2020. At least six of the company¡¯s assembly plants in China will start producing electrified vehicles by 2021, according to its plan.
