Volvo's April sales climb 20% on strength of China-built XC60, S90
Automotive News China | 2018/5/11

Volvo Car Corp.'s China sales stayed robust last month, rising 20 percent year on year to 10,442 vehicles on strong demand for the locally produced XC60 midsize crossover and S90 large sedan, the Swedish carmaker said without revealing delivery totals of individual models.

For the first four months of this year, Volvo sold 39,210 vehicles in China, a jump of 22 percent from the same period last year. The number represented nearly 20 percent of Volvos global sales in the period, which rose 14 percent to 200,042 vehicles.

In addition to the XC60 and S90, Volvo assembles the S60 compact sedan in China. The next model to be built locally will be the XC40 compact crossover. Local production of the XC40, now sold in China through imports, will begin next year.

Volvo has also started building an assembly plant in the southwest China city of Chengdu to produce vehicles for Polestar, its new high-performance electric vehicle brand, along with its Chinese parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

The factory is to start production in mid-2019. The first product to be assembled at the plant will be Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid. The Polestar 2, an EV, will enter production there in late 2019.
