Mazda preps CX-8 crossover, imported MX-5 RF for China

Mazda Motor Corp., expanding its light-truck lineup with its biggest crossover, will introduce the CX-8 in China for the first time at the Beijing auto show starting this week. 

The CX-8 went, with three rows of seating, went on sale in Japan in December. 

Other new-generation vehicles to be displayed by Mazda include the MX-5 RF, CX-5 and Mazda6. The MX-5 RF, a hard-top roadster, will go on sale in China this month with a starting price of 339,000 yuan ($53,810), Mazda said.

Since the CX-8's December launch in Japan, orders have exceeded 20,000 units. The model is especially popular with customers in their 30s and 40s. 

Large crossovers and SUVs are increasingly popular China, the world's biggest market for light vehicles.

Mazda sells four locally produced models in China -- the Mazda3 and Mazda6 sedans, and the Mazda CX-4 and CX-5 crossovers. It also sells the imported CX-3 compact subcompact crossover. 

Mazda is the fourth-largest Japanese carmaker in China behind Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. In the first quarter, the Japanese brands China sales jumped 20 percent to 77,450 on demand for crossovers.
