FCA, GAC launch Jeep Commander output in Changsha
Automotive News China | 2018/4/10

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles started production of the Jeep Commander SUV at its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Co. to expand the Jeep brand's locally built lineup.

The Jeep Commander, a seven-seat, full-size SUV, is being assembled at the joint venture¡¯s Changsha plant in central China¡¯s Hunan province. Output started in late March.

Developed by FCA¡¯s global r&d team, the Commander SUV is being produced in China only, GAC and FCA said.
The vehicle is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

The Commander is expected to go on sale in China before the Beijing auto show opens this month.

It is Jeep¡¯s fourth locally produced model in China, following the Cherokee, Renegade and Compass.

GAC FCA needs new models to reverse a sales slump. After surging 40 percent to 205,177 vehicles in 2017, the company¡¯s deliveries dropped 25 percent to 21,452 in the first two months of this year.

GAC FCA, a 50-50 partnership between the two automakers, builds the four Jeep models and two Fiat sedans ¨C the Viaggio and Ottimo -- in Changsha and the south China city of Guangzhou, where GAC is based.
