Great Wall begins building assembly plant for light trucks in Chongqing
Automotive News China | 2018/4/3

Great Wall Motor Co., China¡¯s largest manufacturer of light trucks, broke ground on a vehicle assembly plant in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing to better supply southern China.

The 4.5 billion yuan ($718 million) factory is to start production toward the end of 2019. It will build Wingle pickups and Haval crossovers and SUVs.

The plant will produce 160,000 vehicles a year at full capacity, Great Wall said.

Great Wall operates three assembly plants, all of which are in northern China cities -- Baoding and Xushui in Hebei province and the port city of Tianjin. The three factories can produce up to 1.05 million vehicles a year at full capacity.

In the first two months, Great Wall delivered 168,376 vehicles, virtually unchanged from the same period last year.

The company¡¯s sales slipped 0.4 percent to roughly 1.1 million vehicles in 2017.

In February, Great Wall signed a letter of intent with BMW AG to establish a joint venture in China to produce Mini electric vehicles.

Great Wall, headquartered in the north China city of Baoding, is listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
