GAC launches output at new Xinjiang factory with crossover
Automotive News China | 2018/2/23

GAC Motor Co. this month opened an assembly plant in Urumqi, capital of northwest China¡¯s Xinjiang autonomous region.

The 1.1 billion yuan ($173 million) plant has initial annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles. Its first product is the Trumpchi GS4 compact crossover.

GAC will double the factory¡¯s annual capacity if the need arises, the company said.

GAC assembles vehicles in the south China city of Guangzhou, where it is headquartered, and the east China city of Hangzhou. The two factories combined have annual production capacity of 700,000 vehicles.

The company also is renovating an assembly plant in the central China city of Yichang it acquired from private light-vehicle maker ZX Auto Co. a few years ago.

Last month, GAC delivered 61,231 vehicles under its Trumpchi brand, a jump of 32 percent from a year earlier.

GAC seeks to increase annual Trumpchi sales to 700,000 vehicles this year, up 38 percent from 2017.

GAC also runs joint ventures with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Honda Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

In January at the Detroit auto show, GAC said it plans to start selling vehicles in the United States in late 2019, potentially through a partnership with FCA.
