Volvo builds Polestar assembly plant in Chengdu
Automotive News China | 2017/11/28

Volvo Car Corp. broke ground last week for an assembly plant to produce vehicles for Polestar, its new high-performance EV brand, in the southwest China city of Chengdu.

The plant is expected to launch production in mid-2019.

Polestar is a stand-alone brand launched this year by Volvo and its corporate parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. The two automakers will invest 5 billion yuan ($758 million) in the Chengdu complex.

The plant will assemble up to 500 vehicles a year. The facility also will include an experience center and test track to allow customers to evaluate the car, the company said.

According to Volvo, the plants first product will be the Polestar 1, a sporty hybrid-powered coupe.

Polestar 1 will travel up to 93 miles (150 kilometers) on batteries alone. Its powertrain generates 600 hp and 738 pounds-feet (1,000 N.m) of torque.

Polestar 2, an all-electric mid-sized sedan, will enter production late in 2019. A production date has not yet been announced for Polestar 3, an all-electric SUV.

Geely acquired Volvo in 2010.
