Dealership inventories continue to ease as sales growth resumes
Automotive News China | 2017/9/15

Dealership stockpiles eased for the second straight month in August, dropping to a 41-day supply on average from 46 days in July, as light-vehicle sales continued to grow.

Dealerships with Chinese brands carried a backlog equal to a 48-day supply last month, down from 58 days the previous month, according to the China Automobile Dealers Association.

Stockpiles of foreign-brand dealerships selling locally produced vehicles fell to a 34-day supply, down from 39 days in July.

But dealerships that market imported vehicles bucked the trend, with their average backlog increasing to a 47-day supply, up from 43 days a month earlier.

In August, the number of carmakers with dealerships burdened with more than a two-month supply of new vehicles dropped to three from five in the previous month.

The three automakers with excess dealership supplies were Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and two Chinese carmakers -- Chery Automobile Co. and Changan Automobile Co.

FCAs dealerships carried a 75-day supply. Cherys dealerships reported a backlog of 74 days while those of Changan had a 70-day supply.

In August, light-vehicle sales in China recovered for the third consecutive month, rising 4.1 percent from a year earlier to nearly 1.88 million vehicles.
