HANOVER, Germany -- Continental AG says it will boost production of car tires at its plant in the east China city of Hefei to 14 million tires a year by 2019, up from its current annual capacity of 5 million.
The German tire maker says it will spend 250 million euros (1.75 billion yuan) to expand the factory, and the work force will more than double to 2,700 employees, up from 1,150 today.
The plant, which originally cost 250 million euros, launched production in 2011.
The expansion is another sign of the company's growing investment in Hefei. Last month, Continental opened an r&d center for tires on the site of its Hefei plant.
The 4 million euro center will enable Continental to speed design of summer and winter tires for sale in China.
