TIANJIN -- Continental AG says it has launched production of transmission control units on a second line in Tianjin.
The microcontroller, dubbed EAST, can be used to control continuously variable transmissions, automated manual transmissions, dual-clutch gearboxes and automatic transmissions.
Continental introduced its EAST microcontroller to China in 2009. The company plans to introduce its next-generation version in 2018.
"We have captured the same trends in China market as in European and American markets," said Gregoire Cuny, vice president of the company's transmission business unit in Asia. "Automatic transmission technology is becoming increasingly popular in China, not only because this technology makes driving easier, but also satisfies the requirement of environmental protection."
Continental's transmission division entered China in 1998. Aside from its factory in Tianjin, the division has an r&d center in Shanghai.
