SAIC source: No contact with Ford on Volvo

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. is not talking to Ford Motor to buy Volvo, an SAIC source said. "As far as I know, our company has never contacted Ford on the purchase of Volvo Cars," said the source, who declined to be identified. Speculation that Ford is planning to sell its Swedish brand Volvo -- possibly to a Chinese automaker -- was triggered by a report in Sweden's Dagens Industri business newspaper early this week. --Published:2008/7/2

Court bans German sales of China-built SUV

MUNICH --  A court has banned German sales of an SUV made by Chinese automaker Shuanghuan Automobile Co. The court in Munich ruled that Shuanghuan's CEO infringes BMW's design rights. BMW claims the CEO closely resembles its X5 premium SUV.  It started legal proceedings last September to stop CEO sales in Germany.  Shuanghuan's  German importer China Automobile Deutschland denied that the CEO [pictured] infringes BMW's design rights.

Chinese automaker cuts ties to Chamco

Tired of dealing with an American company tied up lawsuits, Chinese automaker Hebei Zhongxing Automobile Co. has terminated its contract to supply Chamco Auto with vehicles. Would-be importer Chamco was put into the hands of a legal custodian in April by an American court. Mitsubishi to produce automatic transmissions in China

GUANGZHOU -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will start producing four-speed and five-speed automatic transmissions in 2009 in its China powertrain joint venture Harbin Dongan Automotive Engine Manufacturing Co. Chinese domestic automakers are the major target clients of the products. First phase of the transmission project will have an output capacity of 150,000 units per year. --Published:2008/7/2

PSA/Peugeot Citroen to make hatchback in China

GUANGZHOU -- PSA/Peugeot Citroen SA will start mass producing the five-door version of Citroen C4 hatchback [pictured] in China in early September. Unveiled on June 28 in Shanghai, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen says the five-door hatchback carries 1.6- or 2.0-liter gasoline engines. Zhang says when developing the car for the China market, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen mainly made changes in the color and texture of the interior trim.

Lear buys majority stake in fabric supplier in Zhejiang province

BEIJING -- Lear Corp. has acquired a 75 percent share of the automotive fabric operations of its trim supplier New Trend Group Co. in Ruian city, Zhejiang province. Through the acquisition, Lear secures a low-cost fabric supply for its existing operations. Lear also plans to export New Trend's automotive fabric outside of Asia. Italian company to make antitheft and parking aid systems in China

BEIJING -- Cobra Automotive Technologies S.p.A. plans to build its first Asia plant in China to produce electronic systems including antitheft and parking aid systems for cars. Cobra has purchased an 18,000-square-meter parcel of land near the plant of Beijing Benz-DaimlerChrysler Automotive Co. Construction of the plant and an r&d center will start on the land in October. After it becomes operational in 2010, the plant will have a combined capacity of 3 million antitheft and parking aid systems. Chery plans to build Yaris-size car in new plant

BEIJING -- Chery Automobile Co. plans to build a new car about the same size as the Toyota Yaris in a new plant to be built in Wuhu, Anhui province. Fitted with 1.3- and 1.5-liter engines, the Yaris-size model will have three versions: a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback and a sedan. The model is expected to be launched in 2010, say sources close to the project. Chery displayed a series of new models at the Beijing auto show in April, but this model was not included.
